Mental health issues are one of the biggest concerns for young people (as shown by National surveys). Anxiety, depression, self-harm and other mental health issues can be difficulties which young people experience.
Mental health and psychological distress associated with mental health care is at increasingly high levels nationally, with 15 per cent of Australians currently experiencing high or very high levels of psychological distress.
According to the National Study on Mental health and Well-Being 2020-21, almost two in five people aged 16-24 years live with a 12-month mental health illness.
It is one of the biggest challenges confronting the Australian healthcare system and the second most prevalent burden of disease in Australia, following asthma, that affects the lives of children aged 5-14.
Through the schools mental health & well being service we work collaboratively with our partner schools, to deliver a weekly in-school program aimed at supporting students with mental health challenges and wellbeing concerns through a range of activities including:
The ‘Keep It Safe’ project jointly focuses on alcohol and other drugs and mental health to educate young people aged 12-21 about these risks and where to get support. Young people are trained up as Peer Educators to educate their peers.
We provide youth wellbeing initiatives for young people aged 12-25 across Bayside, Georges River and Sutherland. This is delivered in schools or in the community to raise awareness about mental health & wellbeing and connect young people with the support they may need to improve their overall well-being.
Support is available to increase positive well-being for young people, including improving self-esteem, confidence, access to services, and life skills.
